KIST Europe GmbH, Germany
In 1996, KIST Europe research institute was established in Saarbruecken, Germany, as a branch institute of KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) in Seoul, Korea. Starting with 5 scientists working in close cooperation with the University Saarland and Fraunhofer IBMT, KIST Europe expanded to a research institute with today 46 employees. Since the foundation 16 patents have been registered and 2 products brought to the market.
One main research objective of KIST Europe focuses on the innovation basic and applied research in the field of medical technology and therapy. The biomedical R&D on biochips and sensors as well as micro-medical systems is being done actively. During the past years the Medtronics group of KIST Europe is engaged in the development of a new cancer therapy combining natural immune cells and a MEMS biochip system for autonomous drug targeting.
